Web browser upload dialogue box lacks bookmarks & Browse Network

Asked by Winjeel

I have a hard disk connected to my home network. However, in Ubuntu I can't upload files because the upload dialogue box in Firefox does not have bookmarks nor a Browse Network option. In contrast, Windows does have a network option. As an awkward work around, I need to copy and paste the files onto my desktop and then upload them.

The bookmarks are in the file manager, in the upper menu (File, Edit, View, Go, Bookmarks, Help). If you wish to go to a SMB (aka windows networking) server, use go->network, which is the equivalent of windows' browse network.

Note that without a domain controller, the ad-hoc windows networking is usually pretty flaky, even under windows. You can bypass the need for this if you know the name of the device you want to connect to. To do so use file->Connect to server..., then from the dropdown box, choose "windows share", and enter in the details of the server you wish to connect to.

Sometimes newer editions of SMB can have tighter security settings which will prevent you from authenticating, so if you get stuck, please post back
