to install firefox from terminal you can press and hold CTLR ALT T. Terminal will open, then type sudo apt-get install firefox.

i would recommend upgrading from ubuntu 10.04 to a newer version. Try this

Press Alt+F2 and type in update-manager -d

install any updates first, then upgrade. you should see a message at the top of the screen saying a new version is available.

1)yeah its showing same version as what i uninstalled before there are no updates for this version of firefox.

ubuntu 10.04 is a stable release is there any stable release further.

2)i have tried to install ubutnu11.10 in my pc.the only disadvantage what i felt in ubuntu 11.10 is while booting it downloads all the language packs there is no option to skip the installation of language packs.its take lots of time to download and install all the language packs.is there any alternative to skip the downloads of language packs during install

3)it is compulsory that system is connected to internet while booting ubutnu.or we can also boot ubuntu without any internet connection.

4)is there any LTS version avalable in ubutnu.

1) Firefox not closing can often mean you have something wrong in your firefox profile (bad extensions, corrupt db, etc), or you are using websites which have buggy flash/javascript and just won't die.

try moving your .mozilla/firefox directory (in your home folder - enable view hidden folders) somewhere else, eg .mozilla/old-firefox, then restarting firefox.

Also try disabling/removing flash.

3) You do not need to have an internet connection. (Think laptops on a plane/bus/car etc :) )

4) The current LTS for ubuntu is 10.04 (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#Releases). This is supported until early 2013. The next LTS is scheduled to be released in April, and will be supported till 2017
