Not responding, waiting for Program to finish Error

Asked by Cynthia Hernandez

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop version.

When I attempt to shutdown, I get a dialog box that indicates "A program is still running", and in the window, the program is "firefox-bin", not responding". Waiting for program to finish, etc.

My options are to, Lock Screen (whatever that means), Cancel, or Shutdown Anyway.

If I Shutdown Anyway, the system will restart, but I get the same error when I try to reboot again.

I can look at the processes, but see nothing out of the ordinary - but I really don't know what I am looking at for sure.

How can I get rid of this pop up screen?

I am not a power user, so I have no idea where to begin.

This is a known bug in the firefox that ships with 10.10 and earlier (not sure about 11.04). The fix is to upgrade it to V7 or whatever ships with Ubuntu 11.10, or upggrade to 11.10 itself. You should be able to Google instructions for install V7 on Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10.

If it doesn't really bother you however, just hit 'end process' when you shutdown. It will not damage anything. If you try to open Firefox and you get the same message it's for the same reason. Just open system monitor, click on the applications tab, and kill the process "firefox-bin"

Chris.

have you downloaded and installed the updates?
it's kind of fixed in 3.6.24
before, you couldn't kill it and had to shut down.
in the latest version, the bug rarely happens, and if it does, you can go into terminal and kill it.

Hi,
I went to terminal and typed in something like killakill firefox-bin, something like that (I didn't keep the instructions I downloaded) and it worked. Thank you to all.
