system freezes when playing games

Asked by cruse3 on 2006-09-13

When I play a game the system freezes and I have to push the reboot button to do anything from that point on. I am trying to learn Ubuntu and Linux but was told this system does not crash but it does.

What games are you playing?

Jeremy Visser (jeremy-visser) said : #2

Judging from the support metadata, the issue is occuring when playing Flash games, is it not?

If indeed the problem is with playing flash games, please include a link to the specific games that are causing problems.

Without further investigation, it is likely that the problem has to do with the flash games requiring a newer version of flash than comes with any Linux distribution. However, new Macromedia sponsore flash player is in the works.

One other option to check is to make sure that you have the flashplugin-nonfree installed (apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree) after including the universe and multiverse Ubuntu repositories.

The free flash player doesn't have as much support.

Laurens Simonis (laurens.s) said : #4

If you're not sure how to add these extra repositories, here you can see how to do it:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#head-5bbef89639d9a7d93fe38f6356dc17847d373096

Then, click applications, then accessories, and finally terminal. Here, enter:

sudo apt-get update

you will be asked for your password.

Then, enter:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

That is, if flash is indeed the problem.

Please know, that currently, the linux flashplayer is not quite as good as the windows flashplayer. Work is being done there, however. If you are interested, more info can be found at http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/

It is the aislerioy solitaire game that causese the problem, the freecell is ok.

Laurens Simonis (laurens.s) said : #6

This is a long shot, but do you know what video card you have? There's a know problem with ubuntu crashing badly on some ATI videocards. It's bug #36596:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/36596

cruse3 (cruse3) said : #7

I have a Nvidia video card, on a PCChip motherboard, with an AMD CPU and PC2700 Memory. The last thing that I did was winecfg for the Wine package.

cruse3 (cruse3) said : #8

After installing the flashplugin I am now running properly

Laurens Simonis (laurens.s) said : #9

Now that's odd, but fortunate. I don't quite understand how installing the flashplugin can fix a non-flash game, so I assume the crash and the game were unrelated.

cruse3 (cruse3) said : #10

The problem restarted today and the only thig that I did was installed flashplugin last night and it worked fine until I turned my system on today. I can play freecell but not solitaire. When I do the system freezes and I have to push my reboot button.

Try to look at /var/log/message and /var/log/syslog. If you are lucky, you will be able to find an "oops message" which shows the reason your system crashed.

cruse3 (cruse3) said : #12

I am new to linux so I don't know how to do that, please explain.

Laurens Simonis (laurens.s) said : #13

Click on "Applications", "Accessories", "Text Editor". Once it has started, click "File", "Open location" and there enter /var/log/message or /var/log/syslog

Then, scroll towards the end of the file(s), and see if there's some messages with big "Oops" in them.

You can also attach those files, so we can take a look.

Unluckyly this does not contain any information about the crash. If you want, we can manually try to obtain those information, but this requires some extra-work.

I change my power managment settings to never and that appears to be working at the momen, but is you could send me a step by step on how to get crash information I would appreciate it.
