Firefox browser and Ubuntu 10.04: how do I can update firefox...?

Asked by Dianne Meyers

ALSO, how do I update firefox with the tar.bz2 file?

I have the archive manager installed that opens it when I download firefox 7.0, but it puts all the files in an archive.

And, what is the most recent firefox browser Ubuntu 10.04 supports?

I have extracted the files, but that did no good. What do I do? I really need to upgrade firefox.

Please help me ASAP!

I do have firefox 3.236 installed already, but no browser!

Where did it go?

Please advise ASAP!

Thanks, Dianne

The easiest way is to add the Firefox stable PPA to your sources and install it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

This information is from this page:
http://ubuntuguide.net/install-firefox-7-stable-in-ubuntu-11-1010-0410-10

That's fine, but then do I just get out of the terminal now after doing the other things and then open a new terminal and type this above info. in?

?When I put this info. into the terminal, then do I just restart? And, do I need to go into the software package to install it? This is all I need to know then I won't bother you anymore.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

The PPA updates the binary ran by whatever thing you click on to run the new version

Hi Dianne, those commands should do everything: the first line adds the repository to the sources, the second line indexes the software lists, and the third line should do the actual update. If it doesn't work make sure Firefox is not running, then run the last line again.

There were errors with those commands. I tried the updating to 7.0 and many of the software apps. won't update-GTK packages and GLib packages and even Firefox browser. What I want to do now is to just reinstall Firefox 3.6.23.

Can you please provide me with the utmost specific instructions on how to reinstall firefox 3.6. 23, as I used to have? Or I also have some instructions from a website: www.techdrivein.com/2010/03/install-latest-firefox-362-in-ubuntu.html Are you familiar with this website and can I do this? Is firefox automatically installed in ubuntu and can you give me specific instructions how to uninstall it before I install it again or do I need to uninstall it first? Please advise asap. Thanks

If you want to continue trying to install Firefox 7.0.1, then please provide us with the complete and exact text of the error messages that you are getting.

If you want to roll things back to the way they were before, with Firefox 3.6, you should still *not* use the instructions at http://www.techdrivein.com/2010/03/install-latest-firefox-362-in-ubuntu.html, as those instructions are for a previous version of Ubuntu.

Instead, download https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/ppa-purge_0%2Bbzr46.1~lucid1_all.deb, install it (double-click on it and it will be opened in a graphical program--gdebi, Synaptic, or the Software Center, depending on how your system is configured), then open a Terminal window and run these commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo ppa-purge ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
sudo apt-get -y upgrade

Then you should have the latest subversion of Firefox 3.6 provided in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

In https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sudo/+question/177176 you posted about how sudo (in the Terminal) was not working but seemed to indicate that, for some reason, you were able to enter your password to perform administrative tasks graphically. If that is the case, then you may be able to run a Terminal window as root by pressing Alt+F2 and running "gksu gnome-terminal" (without the quotes). If you can do that, then in this root Terminal, you can run:

apt-get update
ppa-purge ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable
apt-get -y upgrade

Make sure to close the Terminal window when you're done, because you can accidentally harm things from a root Terminal more easily than from a regular Terminal. One way to close it is to run this command in it:

exit

I am trying to uninstall firefox and I went into the ubuntu software center and began uninstalling firefox and when I came to Mozilla Firefox Browser Installer, this is what it said: The Package system is broken: firefox-dev and it said to do this: Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they are a common source of problems.
Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -fd@d-desktop:~$ apt-get install -f
After I did this, this is what it said:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
d@d-desktop:~$

What does are you root mean?

What are third party repositories and where do I find them to disable them? If you could give me very explicit instructions, I may be able to uninstall firefox from the ubuntu software center. Then, do I also need to go into the synaptic to uninstall also? And, I just want the 3.0 or 3.6.23 firefox back. Do I type in 3.6.23 or 3.0 into ubuntu software center to reinstall this firefox version? Please advise quickly. Thank you

This did not solve my problem, in and of itself, but I figured it out with a little help from one of you guys on here and I now have the older version of firefox with my desktop browser! Yeah! Thank you for all your help! And, I will also keep all this info. in case I should ever need it again. I learned not to update firefox in ubuntu-only ubuntu can do that so please pass this onto others. Thank you!
