Mouse stops scrolling page while over a flash element on firefox

Asked by Bruno de Oliveira Nogueira

I got this behavior, what is not common on other OSs, I was scrolling through a page, so when the pointer of the mouse rolls over a flash element it just stops from scrolling the page. Is this expected ? normal ? known bug or something ?

This is veeeeeery old. I got this problem since using linux from 6 past years more or less.

I can reproduce this with adobe-flashplugin on an Oneiric amd64 system running chromium-browser. I don't have the ability to test on a non-GNU/Linux system right now.

I find that this only happens when scrolling with the mouse wheel. When scrolling with the keyboard, having the mouse pointer over a Flash element doesn't stop scrolling from happening.

Presumably, when the mouse is over a Flash element, the event of the scroll wheel moving is sent to the Flash applet, rather than being handled by the browser. I am not sure this would be considered a bug, but especially if the behavior is different on other OSes, it is arguably a bug, in that arguably it would be better for Flash elements that do not subscribe to the scrolling event not to capture that event, but for that event to be "passed on" to the browser. This is, of course, a very loose way of describing what would possibly be preferable behavior (since Flash and the browser almost certainly use different systems for handling events).

You could search for and report a bug (please make sure to read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs carefully first). I'm not sure if this *can* be fixed by the community, as it might need to be changed in the Flash plugin itself, which is proprietary / closed-source.

If you do find or report a bug on Launchpad, please link it to this question using "Link existing bug" here on this question page.

Now, this is interesting.

At youtube.com, the behavior as as you and I have described.

But when I have embedded YouTube video in web-based Gmail, I am able to scroll the entire page and up and down with the mouse wheel, even when the mouse pointer is over the video.

Do you have a way to check if this happens for you?

Can you help with this problem?
