Unable to bookmark pages in Firefox on Ubuntu 11.04

Asked by Steven D. Shown

Until the last updates I ran I have always been able to bookmark web pages while using Firefox 7. However now I cannot bookmark any pages at all. I tried to import all my bookmarks from Google Chrome, but it did not load any of the HTML files into it. When I click on the bookmarks menu and select Bookmark this page, nothing happens. I don't get the popup window that allows me to choose between the bookmarks menu or bookmarks toolbar. Since I am now having problems with Google Chrome that are specific to Yahoo on Ubuntu only while using chrome, I would like to make Firefox my default browser, however this will not do it for me if I cannot bookmark any pages. Thank you in advance.

If you log in to your Ubuntu system with a different user account and run Firefox, does this problem still occur? If you only have one user account, you can create a second one for testing purposes.

Please note that this is *not* intended to be a solution to your problem--I am not telling you that you should start using a different user account to run Firefox. This is just a diagnostic step to determine where the problem lies so that it can be efficiently fixed.

(By the way, you might want to post a separate question about your Chome/Chromium problem.)

Thank you Eliah, I just created a test account and attempted to bookmark web pages with Firefox, and everything worked exactly as it should. Then when I logged off the secondary account and back to my main user account the problem was still there. Hopefully this will help resolve the issue.

Since the problem occurs for one user and not another, it is probably in your user-specific Firefox configuration. If you don't use any other Mozilla suite applications with important saved data (really Thunderbird is the only likely candidate for this), then you can start over with a completely new folder for your user-specific Mozilla files. To do that, log in to your regular user account (the one with the problem), open a Terminal window (Ctrl+Alt+T), paste this command into it, then quit all open Firefox windows and press enter in the Terminal to run the command:

mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla.old

If you do use Thunderbird, then it is better to run this command instead:

mv ~/.mozilla/firefox ~/.mozilla/firefox.old

That will probably solve the problem. If it does, you can mark this question as Solved. If it doesn't, then please provide all the text from the Terminal (select it all with Edit > Select All, copy it to the clipboard with Edit > Copy, and paste it here).
