firefox crashing (java?)

Asked by Barleyman

Hi, I am running Ubuntu Breezy and Firefox 1.07. Firefox will just shut down (crash) whenever I visit certain sites. I believe I have isolated it to crashing on sites that require a java plugin. Flash sites work o.k. I have not been able to install the java plugin successfully. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there,
I have sucessfully setup Java on a number of Ubuntu computers and can probably help you. A couple questions first... what version of Java are you trying to run and are there any particular public website that I can test from my end?

I have Sun's JRE's 1.5 and 1.4.2 installed

Have tried the following to install Java : http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/ch02.html#java

If you have installed Java can you run the following:
ls -al /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/

See if libjavaplugin_oji.so is linked to the plugin so in your JRE installation. A quick tell tale sign is that it will be green.

Please note it should point to the ns7 version and not ns7-gcc29.

Cheers,
Dave

My firefox used to crash everytime it called the Totem plugins.
I deleted (rm ~/.mozilla-firefox/plugins/*totem*) them and everything went fine.

My media plugin for firefox is mplayer.

Can you help with this problem?
