How do I re-install Mozilla Firefox, it opens very sluggishly

Asked by pradeepthomas

I have added and removed repeatedly addons to the Firefox, it looks like i might have corrupted the Browser. The browser works very sluggishly and sometimes even does not connect.

Could you tell me what I must do to keep the browser in tip- top condition.

Thanks

Hi please open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T and run this command:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade; sudo apt-get --reinstall install firefox

than try it.

Thanks eNry,

I tried it, but it dosn't work, the Mozilla browser does not work, it gets timed out. I am sending you this mail from the Chrome browser.

Looks like the default browser is the Mozilla browser.

After giving the command as suggested the package reloaded, and a directive to restart the Browser was there, with a warning that if not done there will be problems. So I closed the browsers and restarted it again , but it does not work. Shows that the page timed out.

Please advice further.

Thanks

Pradeep

In the future, please note that it would be most unusual if Firefox were installed incorrectly, and reinstalling hardly ever solves any problems. The problem is usually either in the environment, as in your case, or more likely, in your profile. The profile holds all your settings, themes, extensions, and any other modifications you have made to your Firefox setup.

To test this, you can either restart Firefox from the Help menu (Help > Restart with addons disabled), or you can reset everything to default values by creating a new profile. To locate the profile, the easiest way is with Help > Troubleshooting information. Just rename the directory when Firefox is not running, and Firefox will create another one. Ordinarily the profile directory is under ~/.mozilla/firefox.

Please note also that restarting Firefox with add-ons disabled does not reset all profile information, only add-ons. To test with a clean new profile, you can rename ~/.mozilla (or as VanillaMozilla suggests, ~/.mozilla/firefox if you use other Mozilla suite applications that you don't want to reset profiles for). Alternatively, you can create a new user account and test with that (the new user account on your Ubuntu system will have its own Firefox profile associated with it, created automatically the first time Firefox is run).
