Min & Max windows not on toolbar

I have not got the three buttons on the right hand side of my screen to work with windows (minimize without closing)
How do I put these on?

Open Configuration Editor in a Terminal by typing 'gconf-editor'. Then browse down to /apps/metacity/general. Look for button layout and see if close,minimize,maximize are indicated. If not, you can edit the link by double-clicking it and type the sequence.

If you place the colon ( : ) left of 'close, minimize,maximize' the buttons will be on the right side of the top window border. But if you place the colon right of the string, the buttons will be on the left.
