When I go to a site like YouTube tmp files do not appear anymore

Asked by Michelle Walker

This is a kind of weird question. When I go to a website I used to see tmp files appearing in the folder...Computer/file system/Tmp. I don't see them anymore, ever. What's the reason? I'm on Ubuntu 10.04.

@Michelle Walker
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 too. Yet I can still see temporary file created when visiting random YouTube page with video loaded. I can even play it using Totem movie player when I double-clicked on a flash video file in /tmp directory.
Then again, if you close the loaded page in your web browser, the temporary files will be deleted automatically.
Perhaps I have answered your question?

Ah, this time I understand your situation!

It's because of recent version of Adobe Flash plugin saves temporary flash files in Firefox cache directory:
    .mozilla/firefox/userprofile/cache

I didn't experience this problem since I am still using older Adobe Flash 10.1.x plugin.

I recalled this problem from the web:
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/09/saving-flash-videos-in-linux-tmp-no-longer-works/
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1690673

Hope this answered your question! ;)

Ohhhhhhhhhh. But why can't I find this folder? I hate to sound dumb but is
this a folder in my computer system or do I have to open the browser? I went
to 'file system' but can't find any folder with those names. I will also
check out your link for more information.

@Michelle Walker
It's not directly found under filesystem, dear.
The directory ".mozilla/firefox/userprofile/cache" is located in your home directory.

Open your Home directory, toggle hidden files and folders using Ctrl+H;
Scroll down until you find a directory named ".mozilla";
Double-click on it and you will see "firefox";
Double-click on it and you will see random "xxxxxxxx.default" directory; this is your userprofile directory.
Double-click on it and you will finally see "cache" directory.

There you go :)

Ok, I found it but the tmp files disappear once the page loads (even with
the page still open). I think I'd rather go back to the Adobe Flash 10.1. .
Can you tell me how I do this?

Unfortunately, you can't revert some packages to older version including adobe-flashplugin. This may be because the software manager has removed older version to prevent downgrade, or due to package dependencies.

The only downgrade method that works is to install using older .deb package which you may still have in your apt cache directory. But I won't recommend this because I haven't tried myself.

I have upgraded to adobe-flashplugin 10.2.x as well, and I can't downgrade to 10.1.x anymore.
Despite this, with latest version 10.2.x, I can see temporary files in the mentioned directory [provided my disk cache is enabled and cache size must be greater than flash video filesize].

If you want to download and save the flash video, I would rather suggest you to use one of method below:
#1. Use Easy YouTube Video Downloader (Firefox addon, works only with YouTube), OR
#2. Use Flashgot plugin (Firefox addon, similar function but works with multiple sites), OR
#3. Use MiniTube (non-flash native application on Ubuntu, search and watch videos on YouTube)
#4. Use Clipgrab (reviewed by OMG! Ubuntu here: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/09/download-youtube-videos-ubuntu-clipgrab/ , works with multiple sites)
#5. Use online video downloader sites (requires Java to run the download applet)

Except #4 and #5, I have tried all methods myself. I personally hate to install extra apps or Java, so I am now comfortable with Flashgot plugin since it can be used with both built-in Firefox download dialog and external download manager.

Hope this helps! ;)
