Downloading Firefox 3.6

Asked by Philip Marks

I have Ubuntu 8 and Firefox 3.0 . I have tried to install Firefox 3.6 as suggested by the browser but keep failing because of 'wrong architecture' I have downloaded a file called 3.6.1.3 tar,bz2 onto something called Archive Manager but cannot open or launch it. I also have the same problem with Novel Moonlight. Any suggestions?

You should be able to install the latest version of Firefox with Synaptic.

If that doesn't work you can download the deb packages from

http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/firefox

Moonlight is only available from the repository since karmic.

You can try to install it from:

http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/download.aspx

but, if that doesn't work, I'm afraid you'll have to upgrade Ubuntu.

Choose i386 if you installed the 32bit version of Ubuntu and amd64 if you installed the 64bit version.

Else it will say "Wrong architecture".

Did you try my other suggestions?

And what happens if you go to System, Administration, Update Manager, press Check and install all updates?

Thankyou joopbraak stil can't access synaptic. The last time I tried Install updates my machine went into meltdown, lost half its functions and I had to use reboot disc. The trouble is I don't know how to use one of these machines. It's just a large telephone link to me. Thanks all the same Philip

OK, can you try to open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt +T) and then type:

sudo apt-get update

Press enter and type in your password when asked for it.

then type:

sudo apt-get upgrade

Press enter, type Y to install all updates.

Can you help with this problem?
