You should only get a virus alert from the trusted antivirus program you have already installed (nothing on the web can scan your drive unless you explicitly approve this).

If you just happened to be browsing the web and some unknown popup appeared, then it's fake and you can ignore it - and avoid the website in the future. Definitely do not install software that is offered in this way - not that it would work on Ubuntu anyway.

If you're using Ubuntu and this thing popped up, just ignore it. Linux is 99.99% virus free.

Thank you JeanAustinR, I am using Ubuntu and that is what I thought ( Linux + virus free). I couldn't help but have a "mini-panic" after using windows for so long !. take care

well, the dead giveaway that it's a fake and mostly likely a malicious site is that a windoze virus alert popped up. you're using ubuntu to why is it a windoze alert?! :D

i haven't seen those in ages, like 5 or so years.

what bcbc said, make a note of the site and don't go there again.

if you have pop-ups like this you probably don't have a script blocker. this can avoid these annoying thing as well as malicious script to a high degree.
with firefox i've been using NoScript, and i can recommend it

installing noscript is a partial solution. the danger with that is the site is a malicious site and you wouldn't know it, so you proceed with clinking links on it.

noscript is useful on sites that are legitimate but you get bombarded with ads and such (e.g. facebook)
