firefox slow or does not work on thunderbird

When I click on a link in an e-mail nothing happens. Opening links on websites takes ages. These problems seemed to appear shortly after I installed Google Chrome in addition to Mozilla Firefox, so I uninstalled the Google chrome browser but the problem persists.

The problem seems to be getting worse - now, when I click on any link in the Ubuntu help centre, I get a popup which says that the page is unable to load, the URL is invalid.
