Somehow the settings of the script has been changed on my laptop, I need help to make webpages look normal again, something about css encoding it's all over the place!!!

Asked by Stacey Radmore

I can load pages no problem it's just the way they look... there's all kind of tiny embedded text, css...my ex loaded ubuntu and now I'm totally lost as to how to fix it, I tried web developer tools and am sure I've narrowed it down to the problem, I just don't know how to fix it. there's tiny text instead of links and buttons... still able to navigate, just very difficult as it looks very strange. I need a walkthrough!! it should be unicode utf 8 I think.. but it's looking weird... example.. in the search field on facebook it looks like this...*Searchonfocus:return wait_for_load(this, event, function() {JSCC.get('j4cddbf9170c4b81160556823').init(["searchRecorderBasic"]); ;});onclick:var q = $("q");if (q.value == q.getAttribute("placeholder")) {q.focus(); return false;} instead of the search box you would type in....

Try moving your existing firefox profile out of the way. You will "lose" your bookmarks, but you can get them back by exporting them from the bookmarks section. Your plugins you can re-install.

To do this:

close all firefox windows.

Open nautilus (The file manager), then go to your home folder select View->Show Hidden files. rename the folder ".mozilla" to "mozilla-backup"

Now restart firefox.

This will restore firefox back to its default state, and may solve your problem.

P.S.

In the above, because you have mentioned facebook and CSS, I am assuming that your are only experiencing problems in your web browser. If otherwise, please do say.

Try installing "Chromium-browser" from software centre until you fix Firefox. Chromium is a different browser.

nautilis? really? WHERE??? HOW DO I DO THAT? I NEED A WALKTHROUGH... I get what you are saying... I am not sure how to import bookmarks though... I am also unsure how to get the plugins.. usually , I am notified if I need plugins or any extra downloads... so I just do it.... but again... I have NEVER used ubuntu and this is all to extreme for me... sooo many rules and dependencies, I am all to unfamiliar with.... If this was windows.. no problem.... I am smart enough to figure it out, but now, I have been to so many menus and so many tools and stylesheets and crap.. I am afraid to restart this friggen thing... please give me a play by play... I'm sure your suggestion will work... but.. um..... where do I begin? God, I have been trying to fix this for months.. I feel like an idiot asking for a play by play, but I really need it..... thanks for your help... I truly appreciate it!

In case move profile folder.
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Linux

Close Firefox.

Open a terminal.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GnomeTerminal

Type (or copy&paste):
mv ~/.mozilla mozilla-broken

## use whatever meaningful ending you like

Restart Firefox.

Import bookmarks from 'mozilla-broken'.
Bookmarks -> Organize Bookmarks -> Import and Backup -> Restore -> Choose file...

In the popup window navigate to your /home/user
search the folder 'mozilla-broken' -> firefox -> 123ffxx.default -> bookmarkbackups
and import e.g. the latest file with ending .json

## where '123ffxx.default' is just symbolizing an example of your profile folder.

Nautilus is the file manager; its the thing that pops up when you click the home icon.

Here is a video tutorial.

does this have anything to do with DOM INSPECTOR??? Or the global user stylesheet??? this is what it says.../*
 * Edit this file and copy it as userContent.css into your
 * profile-directory/chrome/
 */

/*
 * This file can be used to apply a style to all web pages you view
 * Rules without !important are overruled by author rules if the
 * author sets any. Rules with !important overrule author rules.
 */

/*
 * example: turn off "blink" element blinking
 *
 * blink { text-decoration: none ! important; }
 *
 */

/*
 * example: give all tables a 2px border
 *
 * table { border: 2px solid; }
 */

/*
 * example: turn off "marquee" element
 *
 * marquee { -moz-binding: none; }
 *
 */

/*
 * For more examples see http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html
 */

 I believe this is the culprit..... is there a default global user stylesheet I can copy and paste?

userContent-example.css in chrome directory looks the same here on Lucid and is unchanged since Oct. 2nd 2009. Same date for userChrome-example.css
http://paste.ubuntu.com/533240/

I just wonder what you did in the first place to get this issue?

Anyway, does it make a difference when running FF in safe mode?
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox

In case you'd like to remove and reinstall FF e.g. via Synaptic, just type firefox in search box, then right click on package name and choose remove completely. Then reload package cache and reinstall.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto

Or via CLI.
## Note: while working in a terminal close all GUIs, e.g. Firefox, Synaptic, SoftwareCenter, UpdateManager.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGet/Howto
e.g.
sudo apt-get purge firefox

## Both ways will remove some more packages, which can be reviewed before apply.

Then reload package cache and reinstall.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install firefox

Maybe to be sure reconfigure ubuntu-desktop metapackage, which incl. a listing of default packages.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure ubuntu-desktop

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MetaPackages

I already told you how to install a different browser. It's the third message:

Can you help with this problem?
