After 10.10 update, lost firefox settings

Asked by Stacie Dasher

I tried to upgrade to 10.10 yesterday, but couldn't figure it out. Today when I tried to launch my browser (Firefox 3.6.10) I was no longer recognized by Ubuntu at all & got the screen for 1st-time installation. My browser customizations (bookmarks, add-ons, toolbars) are all gone. Can I restore my settings somehow or do I have to start from scratch?

Open Nautilus, press ALT+H to display hidden files.
Look for .mozilla
Your Firefox configuration should be there. Check if there are 2 profiles. Maybe yours was replaced by a blank one. You can then simply copy paste the content of your previous profile in the current one, it should bring everything back to normal.

Sorry to be so dense, but how do I open Nautilus? I'm not even sure what
that is. Also, from what I can tell, I'm still using Ubuntu 10.04
(Lucid). I just tried again to update to 10.10, but it doesn't appear to
have worked. As you can tell, I'm very much a technical novice, so
please dumb down your answers as much as possible. Thanks so much for
the help.-----Original Message-----

Hello Stacie.

Ok, my mistake in fact, as it's never called Nautilus anywhere. It's the file browser. Click on the "Places" menu, and open your home folder.

You can then press "ALT+H" (or use the menus in the file browser to show hidden files) and look for .mozilla. The firefox profiles are somewhere inside.

Don't hesitate if it's still not clear.

Francois,

I did what you said and found all kinds of folders,
including .nautilus, .mozilla, and others. I looked into some of them,
but I have no idea which is the right file to look for. I saw Profiles
listed under several folders, but I don't know how to tell when I have
the right one. Also, as far as I can tell, the update to 10.10 did not
go through. I think I'm still using 10.04, Lucid. Is there a way I can
tell for sure? It looked liked it started the update, but stopped on the
first step. I didn't get any error message telling me why. Thanks again
for all your help.

Stacie

Hello Stacie.

The Firefox profile is in the .mozilla/firefox/ folder.
Mine is called "4pmsjd54.default", the part before the dot being random.
You may have two folders in your .mozilla/firefox folder, one with Default, one without. That could explain your problem, please check.

About your Ubuntu verson, please click on System, Administration, System Monitor, you can see which version you are running in the first tab. If your upgrade went half way, that could explain your problems. It would be safer to finish it if it really started.

Can you help with this problem?
