Are you using a proxy ? If not, please check in Firefox settings if there would be proxy settings entered. If there are, remove them.
I don't know why you would have a proxy set, but worth checking, right ?

Could you install another webbrowser to see if you have the same problem? You can install Epiphany from the Software Center. Or Chrome from Google website. This way we will know if it's specific to Firefox or not.

I guess you need to decide whether you're using a proxy or not.

Firefox.
Try the option 'No proxy' and test the behaviour.

Disbale IPv6 via about:config
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+question/118637

Verify if you enabled proxy in
system preferences -> network proxy
Enable 'direct connection'.

Now you know it's Firefox then... But I don't know where to look at, maybe a Firefox specialist can help ? Or you should maybe consider Google Chrome, very impressive broswer also ;)

To clean this cache, I think you can do this in a terminal:
"sudo apt-get clean"

You didn't give feedback regarding disable IPv6 in about:config.
Options.
Test FF in safe-mode.
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode

Often it's a profile issue.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs

Rename .mozilla which will unset FF to default after restart.
(Your bookmarks will be in the renamed folder)

Close FF, open a terminal. (Make the ending whatever you like)
e.g.:
mv ~/.mozilla mozilla-broken
