Firefox 4 on Ubuntu LTS

Asked by Ark74

Will Firefox 4 be available at Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?
If positive, will it be at the ubuntu-updates(-backports) repo or would it be part of any 10.04.x release?

Thanks in advance

you can use firefox 4 now with the help of ppa .

Use the mozilla ppa, its much cleaner than messing with dumb bz2 files and the like and you can use software centre to add / remove it

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0

I also suggest you remove it after or your firefox 3.6 will become the daily build codenamed Namaroka which is STILL firefox but the daily build using the latest source for 3.6. If you are happy with that then remove the PPA after installing firefox 4

if you need more read Question #122019

By running:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install firefox-4.0

It can be.

Well, i already know about the PPA.

What i mean is on the main/update/backport repository distro, without the need of adding any other repo.
Since Firefox 4 will be a milestone for HTML5, i'm wondering if 10.04 (an LTS release) will count with it on the future.

It will be added in time, the repo maintainers will evaluate the packages in due course and when it is deemed suitable it will be added. Ubuntu doesn't use the very latest stuff. It uses known stable stuffs so that new users to Linux experience a solid OS rather than twitchy bleeding edge stuff etc.
If you log a bug it may get added faster

Oh!!, so it is based on a evaluation.
That answers my question, well, maybe i'll rise the bug/suggestion to include it.
Thanks

Actually, it'll be added when the 3.6.x branch is EOL which will probably be sometime next year. We will have to update a lot of applications to be compatible with Firefox 4. We're going to try to jump straight to 4.next if possible.
