How to install Google Earth ?

Asked by Bruce Klein on 2010-08-27

Don't know much about ubuntu. I down loaded Google Earth but it will not run. A double click on the icon states "there is no application installed for this."

How did you install it?

How did you install it?. If you tell us how, we can advise.

Please Use System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager and search for Google Earth and install, it will work.

In my experience, the best way to install Google Earth is through the Medibuntu repository. Open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and enter the following commands:

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install app-install-data-medibuntu apport-hooks-medibuntu googleearth

When that's finished, you should find it under Applications > Internet > Google Earth.

The benefit of installing from a repository is that updates are applied automatically, without you having to download new versions yourself each time. From what I remember of the manual way, I think you had to mark the file as executable in order to get it to run, but if you can install from the Medibuntu repository, then you'll be able to delete your download.
