Firefox search engines using .com instead of .co.uk

Asked by Sam Jones

I'm new to Linux so I apologise if this is a stupid question.

I updated last night to the latest distribution of Ubuntu and I assume Firefox was updated at the same time. Now when I use the search engines (using the bar at the top right), it searches using the .com websites, not .co.uk.

I have found other people who have a similar problem but there doesn't appear to be a solution as far as I know. My location in both Ubuntu and Firefox are set to London, Europe and GB so it's not a location problem.

Interestingly I believe I have found where the problem lies. If I go to:

/usr/lib/firefox-addons/searchplugins/en-GB

all of the .xml files in this folder are IDENTICAL to the .xml files in the "en-US" folder, in which they all point to the ".com" websites.

The simple fix for this is to replace the ".com" with ".co.uk" for every instance in the .xml files but it doesn't work in all cases, for instance, if I replace "rover.ebay.com" with "rover.ebay.co.uk" and "search.ebay.co.uk", it still searches "ebay.com".

What I want to know is WHY this actually happened and if it will be fixed, as I know I haven't caused it.

Also it would be useful if there was some way to restore the original en-GB folder with the correct .xml files within, whether being able to download the .xml files from a website or if a command exists to restore this folder?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I'm not using a proxy, just connecting to the internet using the ISP's router via wireless.

The connection has not been changed since before this problem has cropped up, the only thing that has changed is that I updated my system to the latest ubuntu distro (although as I mentioned firefox may have updated too).

Could try the mozilla ppa, the later build may help:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade

May help, I don't use crappy firefox so I'm not much help here.

Hi,

open the fire fox then click on Edit button > Preferences > Content tab > in Languages click choose button > Here you can select your region language, after that 'Move Up' (note: it region lang. should be in 1st row). Close it

Now goto right corner of the firefox then click on log button > goto Manage Seachegines > here you can select the google and edit it or remove that add whatever you want.

Close the fire fox and open it.

Now try to search

I would first sudo apt-get purche remove firefox and after that install it back as well as all Localisation files.
In google chromium you chan change it easilly by editing search engines and using your local as default in this format:

google.co.uk/search?q=%s

or

google.pl/search?q=%s

etc.

Can you help with this problem?
