realplayer installation problem

Asked by core

i am unable to install realplayer in ubuntu dapper whether i use synaptic (where it is an unsupported package-- found only in extra repositories) or whether i directly download the bin file from real.com (the official realplayer site)

in the synaptic case it says that realpayer has been installed (icon changes to green) but when one goes to hear a realplayer file in firefox, firefox gives a warning that realplayer is not installed and please download and install.

if one executes the downloaded realplayer-gold.bin file from the official realplayer site, it asks where to save the files (the default is /root) and when one makes the path to point to one's home directory, a realplayer folder is created and saved there. But one can't still play realplayer files from the system menu of the gnome desktop (applications-->sound&video) because realplayer is not seen there

what needs to be done to correctly install/uninstall realplayer?

thanks for any help

The best way to install realplayer is to make sure Ubuntu is fully updated and then use the "add/remove applications" program (gnome-app-install) ensuring you tick the "enable commercial applications" box, then search for "realplayer".

no use. tried this also now. the problem is that at the first step it
asks for copying the rpm file to /root. when another folder or the same
folder (/root) is okayed, it keeps telling that the file has not been
downloaded or it is corrupt. Then it goes thru the process of
reinstalling twice more and doing the same steps even on repeated
cancelling and exits with an error message.
