You should give a little more info. In any case, if it is the first time it happens and used to work, just try to reload gmail. If it is the first time you open gmail in firefox, I am not sure if flash is needed for the chat to work.

As alternative solutions, you could use Empathy or install Google Chrome/Chromium.
