Installing Google Earth

Asked by Stephen

I have down loaded Google Earth and have it listed as GoogleEarthLinux.bin 24.8MB - google.co.uk and figure that this is in fact an installable file. What do I use to install it. I need to get up and running with this type of thing as I have been giving CDs away to friends telling them "this is the replacement software for Windows!" So, I anticipate them phoning me asking the same type of questions and this is where I have concerns for UBUNTU; instructions are none existent or poorly written. If I knew what to do, I would be more than happy to write instructions. I spent fifty years in engineering and wrote hundreds of methods and procedural manuals as well as legal explanations on Offshore regulations. The download is in the download folder, what next?
Regards, Stephen Mark

I would advise against using .bin files in Ubuntu whenever possible. In this case, it is NOT necessary to use .bin files to install Google Earth. The Google Earth package is available in the multiverse part of the Ubuntu repositories:

So you can use apt-get, aptitude, synaptic package manager, etc... to install it.

$ apt-cache show googleearth-package
Package: googleearth-package
Priority: optional
Section: multiverse/misc
Installed-Size: 68

Version: 0.5.7
Depends: wget | curl, dpkg-dev, fakeroot, bzip2, file, x11-common, x11-utils

Description: utility to automatically build a Debian package of Google Earth
 Google Earth is a 3D planet viewer that lets you interactively navigate
 satellite imagery, maps, terrain, and so forth.
 .
 Google Earth is available for GNU/Linux from their web site, but is
 non-free software and is undistributable. It also does not integrate
 well into a Debian system.
 .
 This utility makes it possible to build your own personal Debian
 package of Google Earth. The packaging itself is Free Software, but
 the Google Earth program is governed by the copyright holder (Google),
 so you may be limited as to what you can do with the resulting
 package (i.e. no redistribution, etc). This package will simply help
 you create the package--it is your responsibility to use the resulting
 package responsibly.
 .
 Google Earth's homepage is located at <http://earth.google.com/>.
