Kubuntu/ubuntu-LTS-alternate wrong screen resolution

Asked by nLIter

Screen resolution has been corrupted in Kubuntu/Ubuntu 6.06- alternate after last upgrade.
The installation has been working very well since June 02,06.
Display settings cannot be changed.
After logging in, desktop appears extremely large(640x 480 or lower) and it extends beyond the edges of the monitor screen.
At the same time it can be moved to the left if the mouse points to the right edge, or to the
right when mouse is moved to the left edge
The same effect occurs in the vertical position.
DISPLAY SETTINGS
There are only two choices supported in the display settings menu: 640x480 and 1280x1024, which are marked as default.
800x600 and 1024x768 are not included.
It is impossible to change the settings. The screen stays at the low resolution.
At the same time both horizontal and vertical sync are lost after moving the desktop up and down
or left and right, with the mouse pointer.
It seems that this condition appeared after an ugrgade of nine packages which included an upgrade of Firefox to version 1.5.0.4.,today June 09,06, and when I logged out and rebooted.

A similar installation in another Hard Disk, used for testing, has the same problem (last 9 upgrades have not been installed here)June 11,06

Some steps taken which improved the situation:
-1)The system went into an automatic system file check and found some corrupted files. It suggested running fsck manually.
-2)After running fsck and fixing all corrupted files, I rebooted.
3) Opening the Display Settings I found out I could reset my resolution.
The only choices were 640x480 and 1280x1024 and the lower setting worked normally.
Going to the high resolution (1280x1024) resulted in the weird situation as before, when the desktop can be moved around with the mouse pointer and its dimentions are extremely high.
Now, the display has stuck to 640x480, which is at least acceptable.

I am not sure what caused the file corruption. It may be something I did.
But the problem with the display settings remains to be solved.

Could somebody help with my problem?
It will be greatly appreciated.
 Thanks in advance.

there are a couple of things you can try out here, as I have run into similar issues only after upgrading video drivers for an ati card. First thing you might try is:

1. (Kubuntu) Kmenu > System Settings > Display
    * Log in as administrator. For display configurations see if the display matches your current monitor. If it does, then set it to a default/generic 1280x1024, save and exit out, then restart x by doing: ctrl + alt + backspace. However if the monitor listed isn't correct, see if you can select the correct monitor and then restart x.

If this doesn't work, at a bash prompt type:

# sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
this command will cause you to rewrite your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. make sure you select the correct driver, which 99% of the time it has automatically found it for me. I usually just press enter the whole way through the config process, but just keep an eye on what you are agreeing to.

Hope this helps, please keep me informed, as I hope we can resolve this issue.

Hello Rich,
I can't thank you enough for your prompt response to my request for help.
Yes, I did get everything back to normal thanks to your suggestion.
The second choice worked pretty well, though I am not so familiar with the
Terminal.
But I'm learning.

It seems that now I have the right monitor configuration too.
The size of my screen was smaller by about two centimeters all around
before.
I now have three choices supported in the diplay settings: 640x480,800x600
and 1024x768.
  Thanks again Rich,
           Best regards, Don

Don,

Great to hear. I am glad that I could help. I try to scour the support & bug
launchpad as much as possible here. The quicker I can help, the happier
someone else can be, that is my entire goal here in the Ubuntu community. I
wish you the best of luck with your system and remember you can always find
support here. Take care and thank you for using Ubuntu.

Hi Rich,

Sorry to bother you again, but I thought I should let you know that I tried
your first option today. Unfortunately, I can't understand why booting up my
PC this morning
the display had reverted back to the low resolution of 640x480.
Setting up the display settings and reconfiguring the VGA and the monitor as
per your instructions, I had all the available choises and I set up my
resolution to 1024x768.
But it was not saved, reverting back to 640x480.

I am dual-booting Windows 2K and Kubuntu with the Ubuntu desktop added.
This is the HDD that I had a problem with corrupted files which I fixed
manually.
The Grub boot loader had also been corrupted here, reverting back to the bug
where
choices were not highlighted. It is still that way.
I can't understand how all of these things happened, but it was after I
downloaded some updates.

Now the good news is that In my testing hard disk, where I dual-boot
Kubuntu/Ubuntu
and another Linux Distro, the above actions work.
I did not have to reconfigure the video card or the monitor and I set my
maximum resolution to 1280x1024 as you had suggested.

Now, I can set my screen to anything: 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 or
1280x1024.
So, my problem is the main hard disk.
I hope I haven't tired you with all of my details.
Best of luck to you, and thanks again.
.

I too have the same trouble, with the following complication:

My monitor (compaq 7550) is capable of displaying at refresh rates of 60-75Hz, and in Windows, runs just fine at 1280x1024 @75Hz. The video card is properly detected as an i810.

I first tried executing "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", then after restarting my xserver, logged back into the kubuntu desktop, and still am unable to adjust my screen size to anything other than 640x480.

I tried the same thing, this time making manual adjustments to the xorg.conf file in /etc/X11. I removed all resolutions but 1280x1024, yet after restarting the xserver, and logging back into the kubuntu desktop, I still had ONLY the option of 640x480.

Help!

Hello Sarma Geddon,
Sorry I did not reply to your letter in time but I have been away for quite
some time.
I hope somebody has helped you with your problem already.
If not, go to the Ubuntu 'Request for Help' section. Maybe somebody that is
more experienced can help you with the situation.
     Best wishes, Don
