Firefox can't access file /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html which seems to exist

Asked by mayne

I have ubuntu running on ibm notepad (raven from emperor linux).

I downloaded firefox using ark.

When I issue command firefox, I get message:

The file /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html
cannot be found. Please check the location and try again.

There is a file /usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html
but I cannot read it.

When I try to access a site at the university of California I am told my browser is not compatible with there site (firefox is compatible on other computers). So access to this file may be necessary?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Which flavour of ubuntu are you using? Ubuntu or Kubuntu? First, make sure you have the right -desktop package installed. E.g. type in a terminal 'sudo apt-get install (k)ubuntu-desktop'.

O.K. The next issue: why were you using ark? Even if you prefer KDE, you should use a tool that is designed to handle deb-packages. Adept (as far as I remember, I don't use KDE) should be the right one if you are using KDE, synaptic for GNOME and so on. Or you can type in a terminal 'sudo apt-get install <package(s) you would like to install>'. To make sure, you've installed all dependencies you shold run one of the above mentioned tools.

The file '/usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html ' is a symlink to '/etc/alternatives/firefox-homepage', which is provided (as far as I remember)by the (k)ubuntu-docs package.

This file is not that important, since it is only the start-page. The lack of the file does not prevent you from browsing other pages. Can you post the exact address of the page you can't access?

I hope this comment does help you.

Dear Gert,

Many thanks for your very helpful reply and for taking the time to
help a rather ignorant user.

1. Using synaptic package manager to search kubuntu-desktop I see
kubuntu-desktop version 0.55 is installed.

2. I used ark because I was silly. I typed firefox and got no response
so assumed it was not installed. Instead of using synaptic manager to
search and download, I used the web to locate a version of firefox
suitable for debian and downloaded that. The install instructions
suggested I use ark. Using synaptic package manger I see adept is
installed and also firefox version 1.0.7-Oubuntu20, which is not the
latest version.

Should I just use synaptic package manager to install the latest
version? I presume that will automatically remove the earlier version?

3. I now see the current version of firefox seems to work ok ... just
flashes the notice about the file.

Again, many thanks.

David

Go ahead and uninstall the firefox package you installed with ark, and then run "sudo apt-get install firefox". In the future, use synaptic (or the KDE equiv?) to install packages if at all possible. This allows Ubuntu to keep track of them and update them as security or functional updates come along.
