Edit->Preferences->Applications does not list Word or Excel file types

Asked by rhackenb

On one of my computers Firefox does not offer Word (doc) or Excel (xls) filetypes. When I try to open a doc or xls attachment to an email message, I only get the option of saving the file and not to open it with Open Office.

The computer is running Ubuntu 9.10 and Firefox 3.5.7. I have another computer with the same general setup and it does not have that problem. How do I add additional file types?

The screenshot is attached. Also attached is a screenshot of my Firefox applications preferences where it shows that Word documents should be opened with Open Office. I am beginning to think that the problem is not just on my wife's computer but on mine also. On her computer I can't even get "Word Document" to show in the available applications. On mine it is. In either case the test.doc file doesn't trigger the choice of using Open Office to view the file.

With my computer sometimes I can only save the .doc file and sometimes I get the choice of opening it or saving it. I wonder if Firefox senses something internal in the file. The test.doc file was created with Microsoft Office. Is it possible that the behavior might be different if the file was created with Open Office?
