does ubuntu 7.04 support firefox 3.5.5 I need to upgrade the firefox, where can i get the best instructions?

I have downloaded the firefox tar file and have extracted the files in a firefox folder in my home directory. is there a command to upgrade and which of the extracted files would that be?
I have tried the synaptic package manager only to get a "could not download all repository indexes" message. the other issue is the package manger has the upgrade option greyed out.
