After installing Ubuntu 9.10 and firefox 3.5 page loading extremely slow

Asked by James H Brown

Last week I discovered I was several versions behind on Ubuntu worked my way through each version upgrade to 9.10 This upgrade also installed firefox 3.5. Since I discovered the upgrade issue because I wanted to install 3.5 this was fine with me.

Since doing the upgrade page loading is extremely slow. Best description I can think of is its like using the old dial up land-line connection.

if you run:

mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla_old

then run the browser is it better

Firefox is notoriously slow and poor with ram.

If the browser is better you have 2 choices:
1. rename the folder back (rm -rf ~/.mozilla; mv ~/.mozilla_old ~/.mozilla) and attempt to diagnose why its slow (hard)
or
2. Continue with the new profile and rebuild from the ground up (easy)

Also try:

1. Type about:config in the address bar, press Enter.
2. Find network.dns.disableIPv6 in the list.
3. Right-click -> Toggle.
4. Restart your Mozilla application and try again.

Unbelievable its back to being DSL and not under the influence of Windoz.

Frankly I expect to wind up being told "get a new computer with faster CPU and more memory".

Thank yopu very much.

No, firefox default config is franky pretty poor. Yuo can use about:config to change a whole host of setting to make it even faster

Thank you for the additional information.  I will try your recommendations soon.  However as I replied earlier I am very happy with firefox's speed now and must disagree with your evaluation.  Likely we have very different requirements or at least expectations.
