Java plug in not working, but is enabled in browser preferences

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

hi
java script and java are enabled in the preferences ection of the browser.
various websites have inidcated that is not enabled
the output from the java site indicates that they are not enabled;
http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
I am using Ubuntu Karmic RC and Firefox 3.5.3

In case you may search and install
openjdk-6-jre
