Accessing Firefox 3.5 after installation

Asked by DavidCantor

I used Synaptic Package Manager to install Firefox v. 3.5 into Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04. All appeared to go smoothly. However, I don't see how to start this version. The shortcuts in the applications list and in the toolbar still point to version 3.0.13

Firefox 3.5 is not an update, it is a new install. First try Alt+F2 and input"firefox-3.5" (without the quotes). Does that work?

If it does work you need to manually edit your menu to start: firefox-3.5

An alternative install is by using the script called Ubuntuzilla from here: http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/

Page down to "Installation".

I have a 32 bit machine so the operations are - download the .deb, right click it and install, then run the command (in a Terminal):
ubuntuzilla.py -a install -p firefox

and answer the questions...

You can then get updates through Help>Check for updates by starting Firefox with the command:
gksudo firefox

I found through the Firefox support site that Firefox has a different application name in Ubuntu, and how to make v. 3.5 my default browser. Everything is working fine now. Thanks for the quick response.
