Looks like a failed upgrade attempt.

I recommend doing a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 from a LiveCD session. Please first test all functionality (wireless, sound, etc....) in the LiveCD session before installing. Please make sure to NOT delete (and do NOT format) the partition containing your /home directory. Also make a back up of your personal data before installing Ubuntu 10.04 (if you decide on doing that).

You may try

sudo dpkg --configure -a

sudo apt-get -f install

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

If that doesn't help follow Mark Rijckenberg advice.

upgrade using the ubuntu 10.04 alternate cd:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.04/
download the ubuntu 10.04 alternate iso and mount it using the -o loop option.
go to the directory you have mounted the cd in and doubleclick cdromupgrade.
follow the instructions. that's it.
hope this helps

P.S. this will only work if you are currently using 9.10 or 8.04 LTS

Can you help with this problem?
