why has sound stopped for my usual user account but not for my guest user account?

Asked by kevishnu on 2010-04-18

As of today when I attempted to play a youtube video I got no sound in my regular user account and cds or dvds failed to produce sound too. When I switch users, however, everything works fine. I have checked volume indicators and they are turned all the way up and not muted. How do I fix this?

Hi :)

Sometimes the default mixer gets bit wonky, try wobbling the volume levels down & up again. That usually unsticks them. If that doesn't do the trick then this guide might help pin-point what is wrong (or might just fix it)

Good luck and regards from

I have sound now but I'm not sure what worked. wobbling the volume levels didnt but going through part of the instructions on the first step of the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure link resulted in a fix. What is mystifying is that the alsa repository was not functioning so I was unable to load the newer version. Thanks for putting me on a track that yielded results.

Congrats :)

Sound in linux is a bit of a mystery to a lot of people. I usually hope that Mark's page there solves the problem or at least gives output that Mark can use if he pops in. So, congrats on solving this one by yourself :))
