Firefox is slow, jumpy, and has white vertical lines

Asked by EDEMPCO

After a recent update, Firefox slowed, does not operate smoothly with the tracker thumb wheel and displays white vertical lines that move when a selection box is drawn using the left mouse button and the mouse. Is there something I can do to regain what has been lost? My version is as follows:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.17) Gecko/2010010604 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.17

Have you installed and configured video drivers?

Have you tried renaming ~/.mozilla to see if its profile related. If its still the same you can rename back so settings arent lost.

The video drivers have been installed for more than a year with no problem to any operating program.

Not sure what is meant by renaming. I would need some instructions.

Of note: I have also been installing LAMP and related programs to operate MySQL. I believe this started before I began to add files to this machine, but it may have been at nearly the same time. I usually try to update before doing anything new.

BTW: I have also noticed that the vertical white lines also show up as I type this message. They follow the cursor.

Does any of this information help to identify the problem?

I am not above rechecking thing, but should have done it before sending the last note!

I checked the video driver under "System", "Administration", and "Hardware Drivers" and it was "unchecked" and not operating. Something turned it off (not ruling myself out)!

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. My problem is solved.
