Loading Unicode under Ubuntu

Asked by Earl M. Herrick

I am running Ubuntu Hardy with a Samsung ML-1740 printer. I have the Unicode 5.0 book with a CD that is supposed to contain all of the characters. The info on the CD says that any Unix system may be used to read most files on it. However, the instructions are obviously written to be read by someone who already knows what the result will be, which is no help to me. (I've written in several higher level languages for 40 years, but I've always been careful to comment my programs carefully so that a newbie could know what does what. And the info on the Readme files on this CD have flummoxed me.)

All I want to do is to get the characters loaded into my Ubuntu Hardy so that I can access them by SHIFT+CTRL and U and load them into OpenOffice files containing my own research work and then print them. Can anyone tell me what I really need to do and to get? Thanx muchly.

One thing you can do is go to applications -> accessories and then go to
character map. That has a lot of the unicode characters most commonly
used so hope that helps :)

Thank you extremely much. I had no idea what was hiding under applications -> accessories. However, I still have a problem. The listings there are much like the listings in the Unicode book that I have, but when I have located the character that I want to use, I do not see any place to click on to say, in effect "Insert this character". Is such a place hiding somewhere else, or do I still have to load the characters from the CD so that my machine will have them? So far the listing in the accessories list is not much more use than my copy of the Unicode book.
Again, many thanks,
Earl M. Herrick

Okay, this might be a pain to type, but here's how to do it: Press Ctrl+
Shift + U + hexcode. The hex-code is at the bottom of the window, left
corner when you click on the letter

The problem is that, for some of the Unicode characters, I can type SHIFT+CTRL U four-digit code and get a character that shows on my screen and also prints. But for most of the Unicode characters, when I do that all I get is a blank or a rectangle on the screen or the printout. So something isn't in my machine.

I assume what I need to do is to somehow (and that's what I want to find out) move the description of lots of characters from the CD in the back of the Unicode 5.o book into my machine. And the instructions that are on the Readme files on that CD are what I can't figure out.
