how can i reset my ubuntu user password i have forget it...

Asked by Azfar

adding to my flash woes i posted in another question..theres another confusion. while installing ubuntu 9.04, i chose to login directly instead of using a password. now that im using the system..im asked for password here n there. since i didn't give any password while installing obviously i keep the field empty and press ok but guess what..the system wont proceed !! i mean hello. so i though maybe i should add a password to my account but when i try to do that....guess what, ubuntu asks me to authenticate the process by giving a password !!...when i have none!!! ...so it wont let me get a password to my account either. frustrated is a small word here.

You have cohose to login directly but i'm pretty sure you have specified a password for your user...
and now Ubuntu will ask you to install software on it... as usual.

If you don't remember the password simply try to reset it...

-----------------

I don't remember user and password what i can do

You can do this: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

or

To discover your user and restore (change) the password you can:

Start the pc the when you see the GRUB row...

Press ESC.

Press "e" for edit.

Highlight the line that begins kernel ………, and press "e"

Go to the very end of the line, add rw init=/bin/bash

press enter, then press "b" to boot your system.

Your system will boot up to a passwordless root shell.

Type in grep -i 1000 /etc/passwd

The system must show a row with your user name at the start of the row
for example:
danilo:x:1000:1000:ubuntu,,,:/home/danilo:/bin/bash

Here my user is danilo

Then to change your user password type in:

passwd username

or

passwd -d username

change username with your real user

Set your password.

Type in:

reboot

or

reboot -f

Hope this helps

thank you. the issue is solved. your link http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword did it for me.

For the developers....if password is so important for getting things done in Ubuntu, the option for not using the password for login during Ubuntu installation shouldn't be given.
