Asked by daniel

I recently bought an Acer Aspire 4736Z, it came with Windows Vista, but I had the hard drive partitioned hoping to run Ubuntu 9.04 as well. I am unable to connect to the internet though with Ubuntu
. Any answers to resolve my dilemma would be highly appreciated

Do you have direct connection to the internet, you are using a PPPoe conenction, a router or a modem?

Well to be honest I am not sure, I am a novice, I have a direct cable and I've tried to connect the wifi . I was told by a friend to wait till 29 OCT 09 for the new Ubuntu release that will work? I have Ubuntu on my desk top and it works fine, I'd love to use it on my laptop. I have read of many similar problems when I Googled it. I am tired of Window's both XP and Vista I pick up so many worms, trojans, and viruses, I tried Norton, McAfee, AVG and it does not seem to stop the infections, I use only trusted sights i.e. no porn sites but still? Do I need to download and install drivers or what? Frustrated is not the word. Have I helped you any? Sorry for my blatant ignorance in the field of computers

According to this page (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne) the drivers included with Ubuntu should work. I don't have an Acer but I do have a laptop with an Atheros wireless card, which is what your Aspire has in it. The trick is besides the included open driver (called "ath5k") Ubuntu will also notify of the availability of a restricted driver made by the madwifi project. It can be enabled via System > Administration > Hardware Drivers. Try both with it enabled or disabled, rebooting in between for good measure.
If that doesn't work for you, yes version 9.10 had better built in support for Atheros wifi, and you can download and burn a CD of the beta and boot from the LiveCD to test it and find out (http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/karmic/beta#Download). I hope that helps.

OK, I will go down to try the wifi and see what happens. I tried via cable it does not recognize the internet connection. I have a technician, he like I is new to Linux. I thank you for your response.

Network Manager 0.7.996 on ubuntu 9.10 does not work well with Acer 4736Z. eth0 will not automatically configured, it can only be "up" manually on the command line. I temporarily use pppoeconf to configure dsl pppoe connection then use "pon dsl-provider" to connect . The Network Manager on 9.04 works fine with the same hardware. I always keep an updated system for both ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 where 9.10 is still under testing status for me while there are problems and ubuntu 9.04 is for serious home and office work.

I believed this problem is hardware specific (acer 4736Z), ubuntu 9.10 works fine (including Network Manager) on my friend's desktop PC.

I am using 9.10 now on my laptop, its working great the only problem is the microphone I have not tested the video cam thats built in on my Acer Aspire 4736Z, the 9.10 is a little slower in booting than 9.04 but I truly am satisfied and Window's is a thing of the past for me, I am hooked on Linux.
