my update manager shows I have an upgrade

Bak up your data/files on CD/DVD/USB before you do anything.Then upgrade your system to 8.10 version,But then you will get info that upgrade to 9.04 is available.So,if you just installed Ubuntu download latest stable version (Jaunty jackelope) 9.04 and install it on top of your current installation.If you decide to do that choose manual way to partition and make separate home partition.There is no need for root partition to be bigger then 10GB and swap 2GB.Rest of free space use for home.File format is ext3 or ext4.

if I install( Jaunty jacklope)9.04 how do i do it manually&would this make
my laptop run better..

- if you decide to upgrade to a new ubuntu distribution I, personally would suggest to pursue the path of a fresh install rather than upgrading the existing hardy that you've got. in order to do that you'll need to either obtain the cd of the new distro or pure and simple download from ubuntu web sites the .iso file of desired release, check its integrity, make either a bootable cd or usb media and install it to new partitions. there are two .iso files available - the live (cd) or alternate.

- at this time there are two stable releases - 810 intrepid and 904 jaunty. by the end of oct 2009 there'll be also 910 karmic available.

we'll help you but first tell us your decision.

I sand you link to for download Jaunty.Scroll and you will find ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso.torrent .I think it is best way to download Ubuntu with torrent.After downloading iso check md5sum as described at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM.Bur iso on lower possible speed.Boot CD and you will see option to check CD for errors.Do it.If everythin is O.K. go for install.
