There were two options in the link provided. The first was to download Ubuntu Restricted Extras and install. I did that as well as Xubuntu Restricted Extras. The I attempted the second method, download flashplugin-nonfree. This could not be found in the search of Add/Remove, so I even tried a command of "install flashplugin-nonfree" which did nothing. Then I thought I should jog my memory on which Flash Player for Linux appeared to install from youtube.com. It is the .tar gz for Linux. But of course even though this is the only download that doesn't give me an error, I still cannot watch a YouTube video.

Can you please provide the output of:

uname -a

You can remove flashplugin-nonfree afte doing above.

If its 64bit you can use the 64bit beta flash, it runs great. If you provide the uname -a output I can advise on how to get it if the output shows your Ubuntu is 64bit.

zvacet: I added the line "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu jaunty partner" after the number sign and it appears there is a space afterward. When I type in the install command, I get the message "couldn't find package adobe-flashplugin."

Tom: The first link had a bunch of alien language, and I wasn't able to decipher anything that would help me. The second link had a dead link to a flash player.

Tried youtube again, and still the same result.

In order for me to get flash to work on my fresh 9.0.4. install I went to > sys > admin > synaptic package manager.
Then searched "flash" checked flashplugin-install and applied, opened firefox went to youtube and well it works. ;]

I would suggest you open update manager and get all of your updates too.

GaMt: Thanks for trying, but this did not help either. From my System you can go directly to Synaptic Package Manager with no Admin. Once inside I searched for "flash" as you instructed. No flashplugin came up or even anything that started with flash. I looked through all the results twice since there weren't too many. I then clicked the reload button to see if that did anything. Still no flash in another search. I tried YouTube again just in case the reload button did anything to help, but of course videos still would not play.

Almost about ready to give up on Linux and scrap the project. I can't even do the simplest of tasks that my Mac just does automatically. All my questions on here are still open, but I really do appreciate everyone's attempts.

Did you updated your source list after adding partner repo?

In synaptic you will find adobe-flashplugin.You can type for it in search box.I know it is there because i use it.Do you use 32 or 64 bit version?That is why actionparsnip ask you to run in terminal

Do you know what version of Ubuntu you are using? Are you using Ubuntu 7.04?

zvacet: I followed your instructions of *save an close file.*sudo apt-get update*sudo apt-get install adobe-flashplugin originally and right now I ran *sudo apt-get update *sudo apt-get upgrade. Then I went to Synaptic Package Manager and did a search for adobe-flashplugin but nothing came up in the search. Since you say that you know it is there, I triple checked my spelling, adobe-flashplugin still came up with nothing. You asked if I use a 32 bit system or 64. If you tell me how to check that, I will gladly get back to you with the answer. I have a Nintendo 64 that I can't throw away, if that matters.

I tried running with the entire Playstation, but came back home right away because it's really heavy. And I didn't want to drop it.

I am beginning to get the feeling that something very weird is going on with your system. Most of the advice in here should have led to much more sensible output. It seems that the output you are getting makes no sense at all. I think that's the cause of a lot of the communications problem between people in this thread so far too.

Do you have much stuff saved in Ubuntu on this machine? Can we try to help you re-install and try to wipe out a few of the bugs your system seems to have at the moment?

Also if you can try to use the Ubuntu Cd as a boot disk then something might become a bit clearer

basically once you have chosen your language then the default menu option should get you to a working Ubuntu desktop with Firefox able to surf the internet into here. Anything you save into the LiveCd's desktop or normal folders will get forgotten when you reboot or take the Cd out but you should be able to access the hard-drive.

Out of curiosity what kind of machine is the computer you are running this on? I have a feeling that there might be a specialist distro rather than Ubuntu that might be better for the machine. Is the machine an advanced games console of some-king or a netbook or a server?

Tom: Sorry, I should have been more specific. It's in English, but might as well be foreign to me. This is an exaggeration, but it's like putting me in a dark room with the good book and asking me to find out who Jocsan is in the Bible. I began reading this page again with your new post. That does make a lot more sense now. You are the first person i have known to try running Ubuntu on a playstation, i'm impressed. I often find the 64bit version of Ubuntu a lot trickier than the 32bit version and since the 32bt version does all the fancy stuff that is normally only in a 64bit version of an OS i quite happily run 32bit Ubuntu on my 64bit machine and definitely noticed the huge speed increase over my 32bit chip. Since then i have seriously overclocked the 64bit chip too so of course it's faster anyway now. I still only have 2Gb ram and that's the main thing the 64bit version does give. Only the 64bit version can address over 3.5Gb of ram (without adding an extra kernel module <shrugs>, <innocently whistles as tho i understood what i just said there>) but since i can't seem to push Ubuntu over about 1.5Gb of usage anyway i really don't see what the 64bit version offers that i don't have already.

With the medibuntu page i do try to read it occasionally and sometimes it even seems to make sense but mostly i just copy&paste the commands from it that seem to be relevant to my machine. remember that only mouse paste works on the command-line, CtrlV doesn't for some reason. In your case i would try

If you look closely you might notice that some of those commands are repeated inside the longer lines or you might notice that one line is irrelevant because another line does a better job or is more accurately the 'right' one for your machine <shrugs> My route is a bit of a kludge (hopefully) and not at all elegant but it stands a reasonable chance of working, especially if you repeat the list once you have got to the end ;)

Please don't ask me what these steps do. I would probably just point back to the explanations in the guide anyway, which i trust because it has worked for me so many times on so many different machines :) Hopefully one day i might understand it all thoroughly but in the mean-time i just want the machine to work. I was a bit thrown by what it said about the ppc codecs step but i figured the preceding option of the 64bit codecs might deal with the stuff properly. One or the other should work, so why not get both?

I think you need to run each block here separately. i am sure it is probably better linux style to add all the commands together but they were given separately so i would run them in the way shown. Anyway, running them a 2nd time seldom hurts and sometimes helps. The output is a lot less than i was expecting for the total of the commands so something didn't run somewhere in there.

Tom: I ran them separately at first. My post was actually my input the second time around, stringing them together. But again, I first them in the pieces you left for me, and then rebooted after trying YouTube. Then to show you the result I strung them together with " && " (as I noticed some commands have this to combine another). Would you like to see if it says something different when I enter one at a time?

Yes, i think that might help - especially if it's the 2nd time you have tried it. There are different ways of stringing commands together and the && means something special, the ; is also often used and i don't know what the differences are. This guide might explain

Lol, i like the line "0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded." Either 0 were upgraded as stated at the beginning of the line or else "0 not upgraded" as stated at the end of the line. It seems unlikely that both events can be true at the same time. I suspect someone is trying out a sense of humour there, hopefully a person rather than the machine!

Ok, it looks like the 1st command worked fine. My machine gave much the same output there :)

The 2nd command seemed to successfully add the medibuntu repository to your sources.list for getting multimedia programs from any of the Package Managers :)

The 3rd command, adding the GPG Key (whatever that is) seems to have gone well too :)

The 4th command seems to have gone well. It seems your system was already setup to play commercial DVDs, such as rented movies and stuff :) Glad to see you missed out the optional step of cutting yourself off from possibly useful stuff :)

I think the 5th command was just breaking the 4th one down into parts but that went smoothly too so that's good :) But i think it's saying that it downgraded something in the process so it might be good to run

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

again to make sure you do get the newer version. Then it should update more normally in the future. I just tried that out on my machine too and found that mine had been down-graded so hopefully now i will have more success with commercial DVDs if i ever try any.

The 6th & 7th command about getting codecs both seem to have failed which is really annoying. On my 32bit Ubuntu it worked fine and i suspect that this might be the cause of some of your troubles. I went to the

website which took ages to load-up into a firefox tab and then just looked like an ftp listing, like a simplistic file-browser, just showing a lot of files the most recent of which seems to be from sometime in 2007! the idea is to then use a package manager to unpack and install the tarball. I don't know how to do that tho - perhaps time to ask a new question about how to install a tarball

The 8th command, the final one, seems to try to break the 7th one down into parts, much like the 5th command did with the 4th. It also didn't work but did give us clues about things worth trying in order to fix this.

Also it seems to suggest that installing xine might help solve some of these problems but that installing MPlayer would do the same and possibly fix more. Since i tend to do this anyway as MPlayer is much more configurable than Totem (although it doesn't look as pretty) i would suggest trying to install Mplayer through Synaptic Package Manager

and use either of it's search tools to look for "mplayer" and then install that. Hopefully doing so might drag in codecs as dependencies which might then be able to be used by other packages - like the one that plays YouTube stuff perhaps.

So, to summarise it only mostly went well. To attempt to fix the rest please try this command again

sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

and also use Synaptic Package Manager

to search for and install "mplayer" & also "libstdc++5"

No problem with the command, nor installing Mplayer. But here is what happened with that L thing:

"Could not mark all packages for installation or upgarde

The folllowing packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences.

libstdc++5:
 Depends: gcc-3.3-base (>=1:3.3.6-15ubuntu4) but it is not installable"

Also Tom, would you mind looking at my other qs perhaps? Just because I am a little desperate to get Linux as a useable OS, and I hate to quit on things. The biggest one is the bluetooth mouse. Next would be how to full screen OS.

I am a bit limited in my knowledge of linux. I know something about installing & a bit about multimedia but beyond that i am a bit lost to be honest. Mostly i rely on setting up dual-boot installs that let people go back into Windows and migrate to linux at their own pace.

A proper dual-boot takes the pressure off having to choose one OS or the other and although it's not always perfect to have to reboot the boot times are decreasing making it a more viable way of running a ysytem than it used to be. I would still batch things up to avoid reboots being too frequent.

Hmmm, feels we are chasing down one minor part of the problem that might turn out to be either the key to the whole problem or else turn into a blind-alley.

Have you tried using Synaptic Package Manager to look for "gcc-3.3-base"? See where that leads us.

Hopefully that tarball thing might suddenly solve this by magic.

Thanks everyone, but I have come to the conclusion that Xubuntu sucks (for users like me, not advanced folks), and I have deleted it off my hard drive. At minimum I spent over 50 hours trying to do these simples tasks: Install, Full Screen OS, have my mouse remembered, and simply watch a YouTube video. The only thing I did accomplish was Install, which took about 12 hours to find the appropriate way. My Mac OS X does all these things automatically, and even when I had Windows Vista, I didn't have nearly this much trouble.

Thanks for trying so hard and working with us so well in trying to get this working. Sorry it hasn't worked out this time but i hope you do recognise that you have learned a lot more than most Ubuntu users learn in the time you have spent with it. Learning about linux is unlikely to have been time wasted although i can only imagine that is how it probably feels right now.
