login site wants windows FireFox instead of linux

Asked by Aubrey

I am using Firefox with ubuntu . I need to login to a very important site that I have a account and password with.
The site tells me I must use The Microsoft version of firefox to log in. I can log in but I have to reboot my system and use Mozilla with windows XP (I am using split system). But i would much prefer to use Mozilla with Ubuntu, that would allow me to use "Open Office.Org Spread Sheet" That comes with Ubuntu. Please let me know what you guys think.

                                                                                                             Aubrey

You can make Firefox pretend to be on Windows by changing the useragent string. Depending on how closely they check the string, you may be able to fix it like this:
Type about:config in the address bar (not http://about:config, just about:config on it's own)
Click ok on the scary warning page

Right click anywhere under the search box and go down to "New" then click on "String". In the first box that pops up, put in:
general.useragent.override
In the second box put in:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090729 Firefox/3.5.2

This well tell any website that asks that you're using Firefox 3.5.2 on Windows Vista. If you need to change the Firefox version, just change the 3.5.2 at the end to another version (3.1.6 probably).

Also, Open Office works in Windows too..

Or just install a usergent switcher addon:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/59

You can switch as you like, and easier

I tried modifying the User Agent String that was proposed by Brendon Long with no success.
Haven't got around to trying the one suggested by Actonparsnip yet.
I had a download problem with the Addon/59 website.

Ahah, try installing it through Synaptic Package Manager instead if Firefox is trying to give you grief about it
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto
use either search tool to look for "useragent"

I hope that helps! Please let us know
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
