computor freezes up and screen fades to gray then back again

ever since I installed ubuntu my laptop freezes up and the screen fades to gray than after about thirty seconds it comes back and slowly things start to work again this is very frustrating when playing games even offline it does this.

i don't know the fix but i am told it is when ram memory is getting used up it is a way of making space for it to work how ever it only happens to me on my more powerful computer which has more memory then my other one by a gig and the other one

the one with less memory does not do it and we are doing the same thing so that does not make sense to me
