Cannot upgrade to Firefox 3.6 on Ubuntu

Asked by nooozeguy

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

Hi,

I am trying to upgrade to Firefox 3.6 (or at least 3.5) on an Acer 9410Z (3-year-old) laptop.

I have tried doing this through the Synaptic Package Manager, selecting, alternately, Firefox 3.5 elements or Firefox 3 and 3.5 elements. Neither method has worked.

http://webupd8.blogspot.com/2009/06/firefox-35-rc-1-ubuntu-repository-deb.html provides an alternate method, which I tried as well.

I now have a Minefield 3.5 and 3.6 browser... is that the same thing?

I am using Kernel 2.6.28-14-generic and GNOME 2.26.1

Thank you,
-Josh

It is not the same thing, Firefox 3.5 is the stable version you can now offer the Mozilla project, only for the version of Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope is not planning to upgrade to the version of the browser only for the purpose of polishing the best Version 3.0, this implementation will be implemented in the karmic Koala.

I apologize for my translation in English.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#When%20not%20to%20file%20a%20bug.

You'll want to uninstall those packages (unless you want daily builds) and install firefox-3.5 from jaunty-updates. It will be labeled as Shiretoko Web Browser and is version 3.5.1 at the moment. This is the latest Firefox 3.5 stable release. Firefox 3.6 is a development release in the Mozilla Daily Build ppa. This should only be used by people testing the latest version of the browser as it may break from time to time.

You can get the "ordinary" Firefox 3.5.1 (NOT labeled Shiretoko) by using the script called Ubuntuzilla from
here: http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/

Page down to "Installation". I have a 32 bit machine so the operations are - download the .deb, right click it and install, then run the command (in a Terminal):ubuntuzilla.py -a install -p firefox
and answer the questions...

Thanks @arochester. Is there an advantage to using the ordinary version? Are there significant differences?

That may be true, but then you'll be on your own for support for the
packages. Firefox 3.5's name will be changed for Karmic.

"Is there an advantage to using the ordinary version?"

I find a significant difference in the search box (upper right). In Firefox it normally says "Google" and there are several search engines installed. I highlight text , right click and choose "Search Google for..." or use another search engine if it is in the box.

Shiretoko has few search engines installed, for example NOT Google.

At the moment, you have to install Firefox 3.0 alongside Firefox 3.5 to get the search engines.
