Hi Kjell

Firefox 3.5 is now available from Repositories. Connect to the Internet, open a Terminal and input: sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

What programs are you trying to install from CD/DVD?

Hi :)

Please try working through this guide step by step
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
i go with non-free components but haven't been asked to pay anything yet. Hopefully one day i will be able to go completely OpenSource and really free myself but until then i just want to be able to watch multimedia movies and stuff easily.

Also this guide is good for dipping into occasionally and might help explain how to follow Arochester's advice
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi,
I've installed my Firefox v. 3.5 today. I mean, you mey to do next:

The following instructions will install Firefox into your home directory, and only the current user will be able to run it.
1.Download Firefox from the Firefox download page to your home directory, (or copy your file firefox-*.tar.bz2 into your home directory...
2.Open a Terminal and extract the contents of the downloaded file.
cd ~
tar xjf firefox-*.tar.bz2
3.Close older Firefox if it's open.
4.To start the new Firefox, run the firefox script in the firefox folder.
~/firefox/firefox
Firefox should now start. You can then create an icon on your desktop to run this command.
libstdc++5 error
As noted above, you need to install the required libraries for Firefox to work. Many distributions don't include libstdc++5 by default.
"firefox not installed" message or wrong version of Firefox starts
You must start Firefox with the command
~/firefox/firefox
If you try to start Firefox with the command
firefox
it will either start the package-manager-installed version of Firefox or will tell you the program is not installed.
Good luck!

Brilliant, nicely found!!
Also try going up to the top taskbar and click on

System Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

on the settings menu click on "Repositories" and in that click on the 2nd tab at the top "Third Party Software" then when you have the cd in the drive click on "Add Cd".

Note that as i pointed out before it's unlikely that any cd you have has an appropriate version of software on it as they are mostly Windows versions that get "dished out" like that. Mostly linux stuff is from on-line but you can use the "File" menu in Synaptic to help build up a list of what you want and then use anyo other machine, even a Windows machine to download what you wanted and save all that onto cd to take back to your machine. Note that when you try this for yourself it is worth puting the file from Ubuntu into a new folder on the desktop or somewhere before double-clicking on it because the downloads will usually go straight into th folder that contains the file you just double-clicked, which can get a bit messy sometimes.

Sorry i didn't give you a good answer for this last time!
Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

You can get the "ordinary" Firefox 3.5.1 by using the script called Ubuntuzilla from here: http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/

Page down to "Installation". I have a 32 bit machine so the operations are - download the .deb, right click it and install, then run the command (in a Terminal): ubuntuzilla.py -a install -p firefox

and answer the questions...
