Firefox 3.5

Asked by Roberto M.

Is there any way to upgrade to the latest Firefox 3.5 (as it has been released for Windows)
I'm still using Ubuntu 8.04 because I only use LTS releases.
Thank you for any hint on the above matter.
Roberto.

To get stable release of Firefox-3.5 you must add a repository to your /etc/apt/sources.list
 this repository https://edge.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-security/+archive/ppa

In short please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type or copy and paste, one row a time then press enter:

echo 'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa/ubuntu' $(lsb_release -cs)' main' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

echo 'deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa/ubuntu' $(lsb_release -cs)' main' | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter

Then add this repository gpg key copy and paste this row into terminal and then press enter:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F

Then update your system type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5

Hope this helps

hello again.
I was able to go up to

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F

and then I received the following message:

Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F
gpg: requesting key 7EBC211F from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: keyserver timed out
gpg: keyserver receive failed: keyserver error
rmlinux@rmlinux-laptop:~$

From what I understand the keyserver.ubuntu.com was not available when I tried to connect.
Is it ok if I resume the procedure from the point when it failed at a later time ?

Thank you, Roberto.

Sorry to bother you again, but it seems that I am missing something very basic.
The keyserver.ubuntu.com does not respond when I try to access it via terminal (i.e. when I type sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F).
If I try to reach it using Firefox (typing keyserver.ubuntu.com as a URL), I receive a time out message.
If I ping keyserver.ubuntu.com it seems that the server is reached.
Is it possible the some settings of my firmware firewall (I'm using an Atlantis-Land Router that has its own firewall) prevents
a correct execution of sudo apt-key adv --keyserve .....
Thank you again, Roberto.

I confirm to you the keyserver.ubuntu.com is working

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F
Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F
gpg: requesting key 7EBC211F from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com
gpg: key 7EBC211F: public key "Launchpad PPA for Ubuntu Mozilla Security Team" imported
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: imported: 1 (RSA: 1)

By the way please try a different gpg keyserver
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F

Here the result of the command:

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F
Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret-keyring /etc/apt/secring.gpg --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F
gpg: requesting key 7EBC211F from hkp server wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net
gpg: key 7EBC211F: "Launchpad PPA for Ubuntu Mozilla Security Team" not changed
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: unchanged: 1

You can also try a different method to add repository key fro the https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-security/+archive/ppa

open the http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0xA6DCF7707EBC211F

Create a new file called mygpg.key
copy and paste into thet file called mygpg.key the

save and exit then add the key with this command:

sudo apt-key add mygpg.key

then run the update and install the firefox-3.5 package in a terminal type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox-3.5
sudo apt-get upgrade

Hope this helps

Thank you to everybody for your help.
Since it seems that something does not work and I am dumb enough not to undwerstand what is wrong, I'll kee my Firefox 3.0.12 and I'll wait when newer versions will be made available via the "normal" Synaptic Package Manager.
Thank you again.
