[Karmic] when will firefox 3.5 replace firefox 3.0?

Asked by Claudio Moretti

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

In the repositories, firefox-3.5 has been updated to last version, but firefox-3.0 has not been replaced and invoking "firefox" either from command line or from Alt+F2 prompt, starts firefox-3.0.
Can the karmic firefox metapackage be updated?

I guess that firefox-3.0 will not be deleted, because is not easy migrate from 3.0 to 3.5. A lot of plugins aren't compatible with firefox 3.5. In older distro's releases (e.g. hardy) repositories got both 2 versions - firefox-2 and firefox-3.

But this is not an older release, this is a development release; this means that by the time of its release, Firefox 3.5 must be the default browser.
I'm not saying that a development browser must be included (e.g. Firefox 3.6) or that 3.0 must be removes, but only that, as it was while firefox 3.5 was in beta stage, 3.5 must be the default firefox version.
Then, if one wants to switch back to 3.0, he will be free to, but if I choose to install 3.5 (as I did yesterday), 3.5 must replace 3.0.

I tried to set 3.5 as default browser in gnome-default-applications, but it is not shown. It says only "Firefox", and if I try to set "firefox-3.5 %s" in the "custom" textbox, my default remains Firefox 3.0

If I type "firefox" in a terminal, I have firefox-3.5 installed and I am using Karmic, I expect Firefox 3.5 to start, not Firefox 3.0

It will come down in standard updates when the packages are put on the repos. Until then you can use PPA if you wish but they are not official releases for Ubuntu. It will come soon. Just chillax

The firefox-3.5 package is in the official Karmic repos since alpha stage, without the need of adding any PPAs; I am actually using Firefox 3.5, I only wanted to know when firefox 3.5 will replace firefox 3.0 as Ubuntu default browser (and that's why I filed it as a bug and not as a question, even if I have not reconverted it into a bug)

Is there maybe a menu entry like:
Internet -> Shiretoko Web Browser

btw. FF 3.5 beta was already in Jaunty [universe] and will be updated to final.

See how it says pre in the image, thats because its pre-release. the official release for ubuntu will come down when you run your normal updates AND the new packages are on the repos.

@Sam
my way was:
sudo rm /usr/bin/firefox
sudo ln -s /usr/bin/firefox-3.5 /usr/bin/firefox

But thanks for the tip :)
