Ubuntu 9.04 Firefox 3 up scroll goes back in history

Asked by George

New to Ubuntu as I am converting from windows. Installed a clean install of Ubuntu the other day and it came with Firefox 3 as the web browser. Every tie I scroll up using my mouse wheel it goes back to the last page I was at. I have searched the internet and found others have had similar problems no solution. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

I found a bug report that sounds like it is the same issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox-3.0/+bug/327063

In that report somebody reported that running the following command in a terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal) fixed the problem:

xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 10 11 8 9"

If that does fix the problem, you can make that change permanent by doing the following:

1) Open a terminal
2) Type the command: gedit .Xmodmap
3) Enter the following into the file:
pointer = 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 10 11 8 9

4)Save and close the file.

If this doesn't work for you, there may be other fixes to try (I found a few online) so be sure to post back here.

Jay Forrest,

As I said in my post to George, this particular bug can be caused by a number of different things. Depending on your computer, you may simply need a different xmodmap line. I suggest you start a new question so that you can control the status of the question.

I know this thread is old but I was having the same problem on 9.10 and this did it for me. Thanks a lot Steven!
