importing emails into ubuntu

I am using windows xp professional & I am trying to import my hotmail account from windows to ubuntu. I have obviously made a mistake in supplying certain ISP details but have been unable to find out how to go back & correct this.
I wish to use Ubuntu instead of Windows but need to import stuff across, how do I accomplish this please??
I have had a message saying, incorrect ISP settings which are the incoming pop3 & outgoing smtp.

I recommend creating a PST of your emails and then importing them into your favourite email app.
