how do i keep my internet from dimming

when i wach movies on my laptop i can watch the whole thing with out it dimming but when i hook it up to my tv ( just by a monitor cable) it seems to dim every 10 min. or so

From the sound of it, it is just your screensaver being overly active. For some reason when you hook it up to your tv it does not recognize that there is video being played. I suggest going to System > Preferences >Screensaver and unchecking 'Activate screensaver while computer is idle.' This should solve your problem, you can always reenable it after you have watched your video.
