I need to allow pop-ups occasionally, how do I go about it?

Firefox > Edit > Preferences > Content.
There you will find the Block Pop Ups box. untick that and you should get the pop ups. You can set exceptions there too - so if you don't want certain pop ups, you can set your choices there.
