If you want you can try empathy or opera.

I have heard the names but do not know what they are, I have been using firefox for some time and have have noticed the slow loading only recently. question 17008 refers to a similar problem in an earlier version 7.10

  Hi, I found the instructions below, which fixed the internet response problem. Can someone tell me how to find my device name (mine is not "Eth0", since an error msg was returned on this command:
      $ sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0

(I want to be sure the new DNS # stays permanent.)

Btw, thanks for the quick response.

1. Open a terminal window and type the following.

    $ sudo network-admin

Note: Root access is required for this step.

2. Change to the DNS tab and enter the following two addresses in the top of the first field labeled DNS Servers.

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

To avoid having your settings get revoked after reboots, or after periods of inactivity, do this:

    $ sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.auto
    $ sudo gedit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
    # append the following line to the document
    prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220;
    # save and exit
    $ sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0

You may be required to change eth0 to your own network device's name if it uses a non-standard name.
I have tried this but get error message.

That has nothing to do with your question. That question is about network configuration not how fast firefox is.
Try opera if you dont find firefox fast enough. All browsers have similar user interfaces so there shouldnt be much problem with trying out other browsers. So install opera or empathy and see how they compare.

I think there is confusion, I changed the DNS to
 208.67.222.222
 208.67.220.220 This made firefox load sites faster, but only for a short time. I then tried the next section but it would not work, I checked the network settings and found what I had entered had gone.

To avoid having your settings get revoked after reboots, or after periods of inactivity, do this:

    $ sudo cp /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.auto
    $ sudo gedit /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf
    # append the following line to the document
    prepend domain-name-servers 208.67.222.222,208.67.220.220;
    # save and exit
    $ sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0

I have tried this but no joy the DNS entry was gone again.
I am happy to believe now that may be I have a network issue

I think you are over complicating a simple problem.

I think you are right, I have no real idea what I am doing, I will try again to solve this problem in net work config but I am not confident. Thank you for your assistance, it is appreciated.

I found 2 ways of improving the speed of Firefox in Ubuntu, both of them on UbuntuForums:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1103926

and

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1120475

It takes a while making the changes, but the effect is very noticable!
Don´t forget to backup your bookmarks before doing this - I losta ll mine in the process... :(

Good luck!

Thank you for your help, after many hours of frustration and trying many different things. Yesterday morning I had a win.
I stumbled on my fix, it was so simple that it shocked me. I found that in networking the auto option was checked for proxy, by removing this firefox was now working very well, a little faster I think.
This has been one hell of a learning experience I will not forget, it has also educated me in other areas I would not normally have ventured into.
I will save the links you have sent me and explore them later.
Once again, many thanks for your help.
Warwick.
