can't install flashplugin

Asked by jkpl

I am new to ubuntu.I upgraded my ubuntu from ubuntu7.10 to ubuntu8.04LTS.To install flashplugin I gave the following command in terminal. "sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree" the command was given following the symbol $.The command was given after closing the firefox browser. Then I got the following message "Package flashplugin-nonfree is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package flashplugin-nonfree has no installation candidate"
please give me a solution as soon as possible. If there are simple solutions guide me with them.I would be grateful. If solving the problem contains many steps with several commands I would be greatly confused regarding what to do.

Under System/Administration/Software Sources on the Third-Party Software tab have you enabled the selections for Intrepid?

Open up System/Administration/Software Sources like BrotherJohn said and check that you have enabled "Software restricted by copyright or legal issues (multiverse)" on the Ubuntu Software tab as well as "Unsupported updates (hardy-backports)" on the Updates tab. Click on 'close' and then on 'reload'. After that you should be able to install flashplugin-nonfree.

Intrepid is the release nickname for Ubuntu 8.10. You know how 7.10 was called Gutsy Gibbon and 8.04 was called Hardy Heron? The nickname for 8.10 is Intrepid Ibex, and BrotherJohn is asking if you have enabled some software sources for it. You're quite right in thinking you don't have intrepid, but unless you need the long term support from hardy it's advisable to upgrade.

To upgrade to Intrepid, go to System->Administration->Software Sources (you'll be prompted for your password) and click on the Updates tab. In the bottom-right (under the heading "Release upgrade"), there's a dropdown menu - make sure it's set to "Normal releases" and not "Long Term Support releases only". Then close the window and go to System->Administration->Update Manager and apply any updates, after which you should see a small prompt about a new release, which you can click to upgrade. Note that what with the Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) release on the 23rd, you'll need to do this again in about a fortnight - advisable to wait that long for the server load to die down. I don't know if there's an automatic upgrade direct from Hardy to Jaunty going to be available, so best to go to Intrepid now, really.

If you need any more help, just ask.

No problem within Hardy, if you enable the source 'Multiverse'.
Please check system -> software sources

Then open Synaptic
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SynapticHowto
search for adobe or flashplugin-nonfree
install, done.

You may verify which architecture is in use 32 or 64bit
